Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is an authentication method that requires the user to provide two or more verification factors to gain access to a resource such as an application, online account, or a VPN. MFA is a core component of a strong identity and access management (IAM) policy. Rather than just asking for a netid and password, MFA requires one or more additional verification factors, which decreases the likelihood of a successful cyber attack.
When submitting a request to enable SSO for your application, whether CAS or SAML based, you now have the option of including MFA with your request.
At UCSB, we have partnered with DUO to offer two-factor authentication via smartphone app or SMS to phone. Some campus systems require DUO to access them. Please visit our MFA website to find out more on how to set up DUO for your account.
